Youngsters have say on playground needs

YOUNGSTERS from Crewe will be assessing local playgrounds in a project to improve disabled facilities.

As part of the project, the youngsters visited the newly-refurbished Cumberland playground site and Crewe Park to check out what facilities they could use.

The children have also travelled to Solihull to view several 'inclusive' playgrounds and compare them to the facilities on offer in Crewe.

At the end of the project, they will present their findings to councillors, planners and leisure managers to encourage the council to make local parks more user friendly for disabled young people.

The project was launched at Crewe's Springfield School in partnership with Central Cheshire Primary Care Trust.

The youngsters involved have learning difficulties, autism or use a wheelchair.

Project development manager Stephanie Lawley said: "The aim is to raise people's awareness of the issues involved and to highlight the work that is needed to make improvements.

"It is time to start making a difference for disabled children in Crewe and Nantwich.

"The playground project is the beginning of this process by listening to the views of children and trying to make a difference to their lives."
